Trees
Berkeleyans for Cal Athletics Love TREES!
And so does UC Berkeley
FACT: The University of California plants more new trees in Berkeley than any other group.
FACT: The oak trees projected for removal were planted by the University in 1923, at the building date of the Stadium–this is not, as critics claim, a noble or ancient grove.
FACT: Over one billion oak trees live in California.
FACT: 100,000 acres of oak habitat exist in Alameda County.
FACT: The proposed Student Athlete High Performance Center will force the removal of 42 oak trees — each of which will be replaced by 3 new trees (1 mature and 2 saplings).
FACT: The proposed new plantings will include trees not now present which will increase the biodiversity and beauty of the grove.
FACT: UC Berkeley supports a Tree Fund which solicits private donations for all trees planted annually and maintained by UCB Grounds Operations.
FACT: UC Berkeley’s tree planting program has produced the highest percentage of successful growth into mature trees within City of Berkeley.
FACT: As environmentalists, UC Berkeley continues as a world leader in energy research and global warming planning, receiving federal and state funding to improve our planet.
FACT: As preservationists, UC Berkeley fields a Landscape Heritage Plan that sets strategies for restoration of significant historic landscapes.
